The new British & European standards for “Chairs for Education” were approved in January 2007.
The new standards are: BS EN 1729 part 1 Functional Dimensions and BS EN 1729 part 2 Safety requirements and test methods.
These standards supersede the old British standards whilst most existing school chairs will pass BS EN1729 part 2 but the main change to the compliance is BS EN part 1 which relates to the appropriate size, shape and ergonomic design to maintain good posture and reduce RSI and back pain in school children.
