NOTICEBOARDS AND FIRE PROTECTION

Building Regulations require wall coverings, fire retardant to recognised British Standards, to be used in large rooms, unsupervised areas or fire escape routes in institutions and public buildings. Depar tment of Education and Science Building Bulletin No. 7 entitled ‘FIRE and the design of educational buildings’, Para.95, states ’Protected stairways, protected corridors and protected lobbies (i.e. fire escape routes) shall have Class B wall and ceiling sur faces’. In other areas, such as large rooms or circulation areas having alternative means of escape, it is stated that up to 20% of sur faces may have Class C finishes “but must include all display boards”. BS EN 13823: 2002 and BS EN 11925-2 is a composite test. To comply with the above requirements, noticeboards as installed must have been tested as a composite noticeboard, rather than as its components which while individually may be compliant to Class B, C or D, as an assembly, not having been subjected to the test, may not be found to comply. Compliant products can produce a numbered test certificate issued by a recognised test body for the composite product as supplied.

NOTICEBOARDS & SIGNS

Noticeboards may be specified at the design stage of the building as an integral display function, or at a later stage by users to meet current needs. The choice of finishes and styles may vary according to need and budget. However, wherever wall coverings in the form of display boards may be specified, Building Regulations and DES recommendations should be considered. The char t on this page attempts to clarify the situation. Whilst pinboarding adequate for the short term may be provided by incorporating plain fire retardant or standard pinboarding without frame or cover into a scheme, when specifying for the longer term, for reasons of durability and simple aesthetics, it is recommended that covered noticeboards with an aluminium, timber or uPVC frame are used.

EXTENSIVE CHOICE

Spaceright Europe Ltd noticeboards are offered in a range of 7 standard colours and cork sur face. Attractive and practical felt or ‘corded hessian-style’ finishes can be used with pins, staples or velcro stickers. Special finishes, such as self-cling “Magic”, grooved black sur faces for plastic letters, combined noticeboard /whiteboards are available and specifiers’ own finishes can usually be incorporated. Frames may be satin silver anodised aluminium, traditional luxury timber effect, or durable, colour co-ordinated or contrasting uPVC. Fully fire retardant aluminium framed Corridor Boards for public buildings and corridors used as fire escape routes, or Tamperproof and Lockable Noticeboards, for less sensitive areas, are fitted with polycarbonate or acrylic hinged and locking covers for extra protection.
